The Honourable Schoolboy picks up where Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy left off; George Smiley has taken over the Circus after the ouster of the mole, but that very ouster has led to a literal and figurative gutting of the Circus. By John le Carre 686 pages, Sceptre. Fiction and set a standard only ever equalled by le Carré himself in some of the other books featuring the mild and clever agent George Smiley: like Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1974) and The Honourable Schoolboy (1997). Westerby, "the honorable schoolboy", finds a tangled plot in the Far East, set against the dying days of the Vietnam War. Title: The Honourable Schoolboy. I didn't understand that either. George Smiley is in charge of a demoralised secret service. I wish someone would make a movie of The Honourable Schoolboy, but I'm guessing its “middle chapter” place in the trilogy means it is out of the question. First off it was great to sit in the sun, reading the book in the warmth took me back to long, lazy days in South East Asia where I always read his brilliant novel, The Honourable Schoolboy. The sequel, The Honourable Schoolboy, is ten times more enjoyable. Jerry Westerby, "The Honourable Schoolboy," is dispatched to the Far East. I do not regret a minute's effort expended doing this.
